John R. Vest, Jr.

John R. Vest, Jr., 83, of Rising Sun, IN, passed away on Thursday, April 11th, 2024 at The Waters of Rising Sun. John was born in Cincinnati, OH on May 11, 1940, a son of the late Viola (Abbott) Vest and John R. Vest, Sr. He was a 1958 graduate of Taylor High School in Cleves, OH. John married Dinah L. (Mazgay) Vest on May 26, 1961. John and Dinah were married nearly 63 years until his passing. He was employed as an electrician at Monsanto in Addyston, OH., for over 30 years. John also worked for the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.  John attended the Trinity Christian Center in Lawrenceburg, IN. John was very athletic throughout his life, playing baseball in high school and for the Monsanto baseball team. In 1961 he tried out for and was signed by the Cincinnati Reds. But in an era when ball players made very little money and with a young family to support, he decided it wasn't the best option for him at the time. His love for sports was something he passed down to his grandchildren. John was also talented at leather tooling and it was a pastime he enjoyed very much.

John is survived by his loving wife, Dinah Vest, of Rising Sun, IN; by his daughter, Cindy Scherch and husband Sam, of Centerville, OH; by his grandchildren: Stephen and wife Kelsey, Alex,  Ryan, Lauren, Abigail, Maxwell and wife Morgan and by his great grandchildren: Sophie, Max and Caleb. John was preceded in death by his parents and by his sister, Patricia Glasgow.

 Funeral services will be 6:00 PM, Tuesday, April 16th, 2024 at Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun, IN. Public visitation will be held 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Tuesday, April 16th at Markland Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ohio County Community Foundation where a scholarship will be established in John's name (checks payable to OCCF) or to The Waters of Rising Sun Activity Fund.
