Norma Carrigan Obituary

Norma Jean Pendry Carrigan of Rising Sun passed away on April 9, 2018. Jean was the only child of Charles Edgar and Edna Pendry who preceded her in death. She was born October 19, 1928 in Rising Sun, Indiana and was married to Dean Carrigan September 15, 1948. Three children were born to this union. Michael Dean was born June 2, 1951 and he is married to Susan Walker Carrigan. They have two sons, Dean Alexander and Ross Michael. Dean is married to Stacy Howard Carrigan and they have two children, Bennett and Blakely. Ross is married to Emily Ann Daniel Carrigan and he and his wife have two children, Hyatt and Everly. Bonnie and Frank Edward are twins born on September 29, 1954. Bonnie is married to L.A. (Larry) Olsen and they have no children together. Frank is married to Kathryn Thibodeau Carrigan and they have two children, Caitlin Joan (Cait) and John Michael (Jack). Jean graduated from the Rising Sun High School, Class of 1946. She took part in many of the activities while in school and started playing clarinet in the school band even before she was in high school. After graduating from high school she worked at A.D. Cook in Lawrenceburg for several years and then worked for Schenely Distilleries in Lawrenceburg. She worked very hard for the Democrat party and served as President of the Democratic Women's Club of Ohio County for several years. She also was an active member of the Phi Beta Psi Sorority. Her husband received a promotion requiring the family to relocate to New Jersey. She took the move in stride and found work as a dental assistant. She retired from that job at age 50 to do some traveling with her husband. His job required traveling, which provided the opportunity to visit many cities in Europe and in the United States. Her father's health was failing and he came to live in her home, where she provided care for the last ten years of his life. After her father's death and the children were out of the house the family moved to Toledo, Ohio because of job requirements. She had always been interested in cards and was an excellent bridge player and belonged to several card groups in places where she lived. Late in life, she took up golf and played very well. She surprised several more experienced golfers with her skill and scored a hole in one while playing golf in Toledo. She provided excellent guidance for her children and made a pleasant home for all to enjoy. She was in charge of the finances for the family and did a fine job with that as well. After her husband's retirement the family moved back to Rising Sun and enjoyed many years of retirement. Later her health began to fail and she suffered several strokes, causing her to spend her remaining days in Shady Nook Care Center in Lawrenceburg, Indiana and more recently, The Waters of Rising Sun.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, May 8th at the Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun, IN with Eldon Fancher officiating. Burial will be at Rising Sun New Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Ohio County Historical Society. Cards are avaiable at the funeral home.
