Ernest "John" Lee Buddenberg

Ernest Lee "John" Buddenberg, 90, of Rising Sun, IN passed away Tuesday August 15th, 2023 at Ripley Crossing Nursing Home in Milan, IN. John was born in Patriot, IN on January 21st, 1933 to the late James Henry Buddenberg and Mildred (Shannon) Buddenberg. John attended school and graduated from Patriot High School in 1951, and married Marlene Ann (Moore) Buddenberg on October 12th, 1952. They were married for 67 wonderful years until Marlene's passing July 12th, 2019. John had many different occupations during his working years; he worked at Fernald as a uranium worker for many of those years, he also worked at the Gulf Refinery, and owned and operated the Red Lantern Lounge in Rising Sun, as well as managed the Rising Sun Package Store. He was also a truck driver for local businesses in Rising Sun delivering oil and farm supplies. John served on the Rising Sun city council and was also a Master Mason. 

John, better known as Pop Pop, loved spending time with his family, and especially loved his little dog, Miss Holly, and rarely left her side. John also enjoyed collecting antiques and going to yard sales and flea markets. Beating him at poker, euchre, or cornhole was nearly impossible. John was a huge Shiner fan and loved attending basketball games. He also enjoyed boating, fishing, and winning jackpots at local casinos.

John is survived by his son John M. Buddenberg (Barbara) of Walhalla, SC; daughters Jackie Meyer (Justin) of Aurora, IN, Candy Southard (Daniel) of Rising Sun, IN; grandchildren  Anthony James "Tony" Baker (Kim), Nicholas "Nick" Southard, Sarah Southard (Curt), Cody Meyer, Michelle "Shelly" Buddenberg, Joseph Buddenberg; great grandchildren Hayden Baker, Toby Gridley, Lucas Gridley, Makayla Juan-Nicolas, and Louis Juan-Nicolas. 

John was preceded in death by his parents James and Mildred; wife Marlene; brother James Buddenberg; and step-granddaughter Amanda Smith.

Public visitation will be held 11 AM to 1 PM Saturday August 19, 2023 at Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun, IN. Funeral services will be held 1 PM Saturday August 19, 2023 at Markland Funeral Home.
