Gary Weston Sams, 77, of Aurora, IN, passed away on Thursday, January 13th, 2022 at St. Elizabeth Dearborn in Lawrenceburg, IN. Gary was born in Milan, IN on February 7, 1944, a son of the late Ollie (Griffith) Sams and Samuel Hardin Sams. After his graduation from high school, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army as a SP4 (T) during the Vietnam War. While in service he received the following commendations: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Expert (Rifle M-14). Gary retired as a Supervisor from Indiana Michigan Power in Lawrenceburg, IN, where he worked for over 30 years. Gary married Evelyn M. (Brown) Sams on October 28, 1978. Gary and Evelyn were married over 40 years until her passing in 2019. Gary was a faithful Christian and a longtime member of the Dearborn Baptist Church in Manchester, IN. Gary loved being outdoors hunting and especially fishing. He was also musically talented and played different instruments. Gary was a people person and always willing to give a helping hand to those that needed it.
Gary is survived by a daughter, Angela Sparks (Hilbert), of Junction City, OH; by two sons, Anthony Sams, of Moores Hill, IN and Gary M. Sams (Jeanette), of Cincinnati, OH; by two step daughters, Lelia Coffman (William), of Dillsboro, IN and Lisa Lane (Mark), of Aurora, IN; by a step son,Robert McCord (Kristi Martin), of Bear Branch, IN; by 5 grandchildren, 12 step grandchildren and several great and great great grandchildren and by his longtime friend, Phil Harmeyer. He was preceded in death by his parents, by his wife Evelyn, by his step daughters Tammy McCord and Eugenia "Jeanie" Parker, by his step granddaughter Cody Lynn Cotton and by his sisters Alberta, Ruth and Pauline.
Visitation will be held 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Tuesday, January 18th at Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun, IN. Funeral services will follow at 1 PM at Markland Funeral Home with Pastor Gordon Shinkle officiating. Burial with military honors will be at New Liberty Cemetery in East Enterprise, IN.
