Helen Dorothy (Bales) Phelps

Helen Dorothy Phelps, 98, of Rising Sun, IN, passed away on Sunday, July 13th, 2025 at the home of her daughter. Helen was born in Somerset, KY on July 24, 1926, a daughter of the late Zula (Rainey) Bales and Jess  Bales. She was one of 7 siblings. Helen married Orville Lee Phelps on January 12th, 1945. Helen and Orville were married 55 years until his passing on February 28th, 2000. Helen worked at the Avon manufacturing plant in Springdale, Ohio for over 20 years. She was an active member of the Grants Creek Baptist Church for over 40 years. Helen loved her church family. Helen enjoyed embroidering and quilting and her family treasures many of the pieces she made.

Helen is survived by her daughters, Vickie Shelton, of Cincinnati, OH and Julie Courter (Donnie), of Rising Sun, IN; by her grandchildren, Marvin Jr. Phelps, Rochela Phelps, Richard Phelps, Debbie York, Donna Shelton, Michael Shelton, David Shelton, Michael Leigh, Daniel Dickerson, Alyssa Aerni & Alex Courter; by 32 great grandchildren, 40 great great grandchildren and 1 great great great granddaughter. Helen is also survived by a sister, Jessie Collins, of Indianapolis, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents, by her husband, Orville, by a son, Marvin Phelps, by daughters, Laura Diane Salyers and Nina Dickerson and by grandchildren: Kimberly Phelps, Bruce Phelps & April Gill.
 

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM, Thursday, July 17th, 2025 at Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun, IN with Pastor Chris Majors officiating. Visitation will be held 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Thursday, July 17th at Markland Funeral Home. Burial will be at Rising Sun New Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Grants Creek Baptist Church.
