John Mattingly Obituary

John Stephen Mattingly, 70 years old of Rising Sun, Indiana passed away Thursday, December 23, 2021 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood, Kentucky with his wife at his side. His parents were the late John and Reynelda (Watts) Mattingly. He was born September 10, 1951 in Batesville, IN. He attended St. Mary's Grade School, Aurora. He graduated from St. Xavier High School, Cincinnati in 1969. John attended Thomas More College and graduated in 1973 with a degree in History and Spanish. He worked in the family business, Rising Sun Canning Corp for his parents starting at a young age. After graduation he worked full time until 1993. Later he worked at the Providence Hospital, Cincinnati and later drove a truck for Restaurant Technologies, Inc., Cincinnati until he retired in 2017.

He married Kathleen (Siegrist) Mattingly, July 9, 1977 at St. Agnes Church, Ft. Wright, KY. They were married over 44 years. They were blessed with three sons, Andy (Amy), Ben, and Charlie Mattingly. They have three grandchildren, Lily Grace, John Everett, and Henry James Mattingly. His family was the  most important thing to him. He was a loving dedicated husband, wonderful father and a fun grandfather known as Papa John.
His faith was also very important to him. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Aurora and sang in the church choir for many years along with his wife. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a men's friendship/prayer group. He liked gardening, raising flowers and vegetables. He also enjoyed wood working and working with his hands. He enjoyed cooking and was an excellent baker. John had many interests including playing the guitar, collecting stamps, reading, especially military history, watching TV and old movies, especially old westerns. John volunteered with Cub Pack 650 and Boy Scout Troop 605 in Rising Sun for many years. He enjoyed traveling even if just small trips. John and Kathy had fun taking grandchildren on small trips. He was a quiet man but always ready to help when needed. He will be missed by many.

He is survived by his wife, sons, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Regina (Dick) Siegrist, his brother, Bob Mattingly, his brothers-in-law,  Steve Siegrist, Tim Siegrist, his sisters-in-law, Martha Moffitt, Laureen Siegrist, several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews and several cousins.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Reynelda Mattingly, his sister-in-law, Chandra Mattingly, his brother-in-law Bob Moffitt and his nephew, Anthony Siegrist.

Charitable contributions: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church or Phi Beta Psi Sorority for their many cancer projects.

A public visitation will be held Thursday, December 30th, from 5 - 8 PM at the Markland Funeral Home. A rosary service will be held Friday, December 31st, at 9 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Additional visitation time will be held following the rosary service until the start of the funeral mass at 11 AM.
