Larry Courter Obituary

Larry Thomas Courter, 88, of Florence, IN, passed away on Saturday, January 24th, 2026 at St. Elizabeth Edgewood Hospice. Larry was born on February 7, 1937, a son of the late Hazel Eva (Robinson) Ryan and Lucian Thomas Courter. Larry entered this world in the the top of a 2 story garage in Lawrenceburg, IN during the 1937 flood. Larry attended Patriot Elementary School until the 6th grade and then he was homeschooled by his sisters until the 8th grade. Larry began work at a young age due to the passing of his father. He later went on to receive his GED, along with his wife Delcenia, from Vevay High School. Larry met the love of his life Delcenia at Grants Creek Baptist Church when they both were young. Larry and Delcenia were married on October 20th, 1957 and spent over 60 love filled years together until Delcenia's passing in 2017. While attending Grants Creek Baptist Church, Larry taught the teenage boys Sunday School Class and drove the church bus. Larry and Delcenia later became faithful members of the Rising Sun Church of Christ.  Larry worked as foreman at Stedman's Foundry until 1979 and then on to Dayton Walther Castings in 1981 until his retirement in 1996. He also was a substitute school bus driver for many years for his wife. The rest of Larry's time was spent working the family farm. Larry enjoyed woodworking,  doing ceramics with Delcenia, camping, farming, his dogs and in his younger years, bowling, fishing and golf. Larry was a man that knew how to do just about anything and was an incredible person. He loved his family and was very proud of them.

Larry is  survived by his daughter, Cindy Griggs and husband Mike, of Livingston, LA; by his two sons, Dennis Courter and wife Roberta "Iles", of Alexandria, KY and Anthony Courter and wife Stefani, of Rising Sun, IN;  by his grandchildren: Tonja Humphrey (Michael), Jason Griggs (Sarah), Rodney Griggs (Adria), Jessica Courter Brown (Roger), Jeffrey Courter ( Ezra Langford), Thomas Courter, Andrew Courter (Sarah), Steven Courter (Kelsey Hillman) and Tifani Courter; by his great grandchildren: John, Michaela & Alan Buettner, Michael, Nathanael, Joseph & Gabriel Griggs, Abigail, Adam, Aidan, Amelia & Axel Griggs and Lee Brown;  and by his great great grandchildren: Asayah & Asriel Buettner. Larry is also survived by four sisters, Linda Elam, of Lawrenceburg, IN;  Loretta Mounce, of Greendale, IN;  Erma Rae Conner, of Vevay, IN and Eva Christine Stewart, of Trenton, OH and by sister-in-law, Evelyn Kittle, of Rising Sun, IN. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, by his wife, Delcenia, by his son, Jeff Courter , by his great granddaughter, Victoria Griggs, by his great grandson, Noah Griggs and by his sister, Patty Courter.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM, Friday, January 30th, 2026 at Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun, IN with Brother Greg Matthew officiating. Visitation will be held 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Friday, January 30th at Markland Funeral Home. Burial will be at New Liberty Cemetery in East Enterprise, IN. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Elizabeth Foundation c/o Hospice Programs or P.A.W.S. of Dearborn County.
