Larry Dean Thayer was born in Milan, IN on September 23, 1938, a son of the late Alma M. (Cutter) Thayer and William F. Thayer. Larry passed away on Sunday, October 17th, 2021 at St. Elizabeth Dearborn in Lawrenceburg, IN at the age of 83. He grew up in the Ohio County community and was a 1956 graduate of Rising Sun High School. After his graduation from high school, Larry operated a dairy farm for some time and then worked for the Welch Oil Company. Larry was later employed by the Aurora Casket Company, retiring after 38 years of service. After his retirement from Aurora, Larry went on to spend another 10 years driving the shuttle bus for the Grand Victoria and later Rising Star Casino. Larry married Linda Kay (Gridley) Thayer on March 20, 1981 at the Rising Sun Methodist Church. Larry and Linda were married over 40 years until his passing. Larry was a very civic minded person. He was a former member of the Rising Sun Life Squad, Rising Sun Fire Department, Ohio County School Board, Ohio County Council, and Rising Sun City Council. He was also very active in the Rising Sun High School Band pit crew, where the kids affectionately called him Pappy. Larry was a man of faith and a member of the Rising Sun Church of Christ. Larry was a kind person and always ready to lend his neighbors a helping hand. Farming remained an important part of his life and he enjoyed raising cattle. Larry loved spending time with his family and friends telling stories.
Larry is survived by his loving wife, Linda Thayer, of Rising Sun, IN; by his two sons Marcus Thayer and wife Hannah, of Rising Sun, IN and Cody Thayer and wife Kayla, of Rising Sun, IN; by his beloved grandchildren: Isaiah, Abram, Ephraim, Ezekiel, Solomon, Jameson and Oliver. Larry is also survived by sister-in-law, Deborah Lafollette (Mike) and by brothers-in-law Jim Gridley and Paul Gridley, all of Rising Sun, IN.
Visitation will be held 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, October 22nd at Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun, IN. Funeral services will be 11 AM, Saturday, October 23rd at Markland Funeral Home with Brother Greg Matthew officiating. Burial will be at Rising Sun New Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to Parkinson Support and Wellness. Cards are available at the funeral home.
