Lela B. Richards, 78, of Rising Sun, IN, passed away at 2:50 PM, Monday, August 2, 2021 at St. Elizabeth Dearborn, Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Lela was born in Vevay, IN on September 1, 1942, a daughter of the late Laura (Woodruff) Land and James W. Henderson. She attended school in Rising Sun and was later employed in environmental services at the Dearborn County Hospital. On May 23, 1959, she was married to John Richards, who preceded her in death on July 11, 2010. Lela previously attended church at the Rising Sun Church of the Nazarene and most recently at the First Baptist Church of Rising Sun.
Lela had a talent for telling stories and creating a home that everyone felt welcome at. Family and friends could often be found at her home sharing a good conversation and a good meal, with Chinese food being her personal favorite. Spending time with her family and her grandchildren and being their "Nana" was her greatest joy. Together they created many special memories, especially while traveling on vacation. She will be dearly missed by all of them.
Lela is survived by her sons Rex Allen Richards of Rising Sun, IN and John W. Richards (Maritza) of Noblesville, IN; daughters Annette Richards (Eugene Marsh) of Rising Sun, IN and Melissa "Missy" Davis (Odis) of Rising Sun, IN; brother Herbert Henderson (Barbara) of Rising Sun, IN; grandchildren Jessica, John, Ashley, Lela, Krystal, Hannah, Spencer, Hayley, Isabelle, and Alex; 12 great grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, Leland "Dubby" Henderson and Larry Henderson and sister, Geneva "Dolly" Mosley.
A public visitation will be held Thursday, August 5, from 5 - 8 PM at the Markland Funeral Home. Funeral will be Friday, August 6, at 11 AM at the Markland Funeral Home with burial to follow at the Rising Sun New Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or First Baptist Church of Rising Sun.
The family would also like to express their deep gratitude to the staff of St. Elizabeth Dearborn for the excellent and compassionate care they received. It was such a comfort during such a difficult time.
