Leroy George Guard Obituary
Leroy George Guard passed away at the Waters of Rising Sun on Saturday, May 23rd, 2026, at 11:50am at the age of 101. He was born September 14th, 1924, in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, the son of George and Estella (Siekerman) Guard. He graduated from Dillsboro High School in 1943. Prior to his graduation in May of 1943, he was drafted into United States Army/Air Force on March 20 th , 1943. He was part of the 719th Bomb Squadron 449th Bomb Group. He was stationed in Italy and his service consisted of Po Valley; Naples-Foggia; Rome-Arno; North Appenines; Normandy Northern France; Rhineland; Southern France; and Air Offensive Europe. He ended his service to our Country on May 12, 1945. On June 16th, 1951, he was united in marriage to the late Katherine Marie Guard (Calvert), and he helped raise her son Max Edwin Scalf. Upon this union there were two other children who were born, Kathy Dawson (Guard) and Mark A. Guard.
In his younger years he enjoyed playing basketball. He often talked about taking trips with several other Ohio County residents for basketball tournaments. He was also part of the Seagram’s softball team, along with playing for Grandpa “Grenner” Calvert’s Softball Team. Golf was another past time for him, which he took up in later life. He was employed by Seagram upon his return from WWII. In 1987 he retired from Seagram after 37 years. He served several years on the Rising Sun Planning Commission. He was appointed and served on the Lifetime Resources Board. He also served as a Blue Cross/ Blue Shield Ambassador, which helped seniors with Medicare and Medicaid. He will be greatly missed by his children Kathy and Mark; by daughter-in-law Sue Scalf; grandchildren Nick Scalf (Kim), Michele Scalf Weissman (Michael), Jenny Dawson Gaertner (Ben); great grandchildren Shelby Scalf Caldwell (Jacob), Logan Scalf, Garrett Weissman, Hanna Weissman, Madelyn Gaertner, Ally, Jakob, and Kori Powell; great-great grandchildren Roman and Navy Caldwell, Nephews Grant McCardle, Terry Scudder, Gregory Roberts, Tim Scudder; Nieces Barb Roberts, Linda McCardle Boruff and Laura Roberts Trice. He was preceded in death by his wife Katherine Guard, by his parents George & Estella Guard, by his brother Norman Guard, by his stepson Ed Scalf, by his son-in-law Donald Dawson.
Funeral Service at Markland Funeral Home, Rising Sun, Indiana at 11:00am on Thursday, May 28 th with Pastor Tom Work officiating. Friends are invited to call Wednesday, May 27th from 5-7pm at Markland Funeral Home. Interment will be at Rising Sun New Cemetery, Rising Sun, Indiana with military rites by the Southeastern Indiana Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rising Sun Methodist Church, Ohio County EMS, or Rising Sun Lions Club Paul Scudder Memorial Scholarship Fund.
