Naomi Frances (Gulley) Thayer Slayback, 97, of Rising Sun, IN, passed away at 5:08 AM, Thursday, April 18th, 2019 at Ripley Crossing in Milan, IN. Naomi was born in East Enterprise, IN on June 21, 1921, a daughter of the late Ruth Naomi (Morellion) and Cloyd Gulley. She attended Claybank School in Ohio County. She worked in Lawrenceburg, IN for over 20 years. Naomi also formerly worked at a grocery store in Versailles, IN and was a cook at different establishments over the years. Her most cherished job was raising and caring for her children and providing a loving home to them and her grandchildren. Naomi was a faithful Christian and longtime member of Bethel Unity Baptist Church in Rising Sun, IN. Naomi liked gardening, growing roses, and tending to her azaleas. She was also a musician and enjoyed playing the piano and the guitar when she was younger. Naomi loved to travel and was a Cincinnati Reds fan.
Naomi is survived by six daughters: Jean Howe of Greenwood, IN; Gayla Laker of Aurora, IN; Retta Callis (Steve), of Sevierville, TN; Carloyn Walton, of Rising Sun, IN; Belinda Waller (Jack), of Rising Sun, IN and Denise Snelling (Gary Wuellenweber), of Rising Sun, IN; by four sons: Russell Thayer (Sharon), of Rising Sun, IN; Roger Thayer (Judy), of Rising Sun, IN; Rodney Thayer (Cindy), of Aurora, IN and Randy Thayer, of Rising Sun, IN; by sister-in-law Myra Gulley, of Mason, OH; by 25 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren. Naomi was preceded in death by her first and second husbands, Melvin Thayer and Bernard Slayback, by a son, Hubert Leslie, by brothers, Victor Gulley, Onlie Gulley, and Hubert Dale Gulley; by sisters, Ester Brown, Roberta Hastings, Nadene Jackson, Wanda Wainscott, Delores Whiteford, Marcella Jackson, and Vada Weber and by sons-in law, Richard Howe, Earl Laker, and Scott Walton.
Funeral services will be 1 PM, Monday, April 22nd at Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun, IN with Rev. Jim Jackson officiating. Visitation will be 11 AM till 1 PM on Monday at Markland Funeral Home.
