Robert "John" Mathews

Robert “Johnboy” Mathews, formerly of Sunman, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Sunday July 21, 2024. He was born on October 6, 1952 to Margaret (Kinnett) and Ohmer Mathews.

John loved spending time outdoors gardening, hunting, and fishing. He enjoyed taking risks at the Casino, scratching lottery tickets, and bidding at auctions. He had a passion for spending time with family; playing cards and watching wrestling with his grandson. John loved to stay busy, whether it was working on cars, welding yard art, or baking yeast rolls. Above all, John loved his family and will be terribly missed.

 He is survived by his wife, Theresa Mathews; daughter Margaret (Eric) Cross; grandson, Rook Cross; sisters, Connie (Bob) Hunger, and Beverly McDole; and brother, Gary Mathews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister, and 6 brothers.

Visitation will be held Saturday, July 27th, at the Markland Funeral Home from 11 AM – 1 PM with funeral at 1 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Education Fund established for his grandson, checks made payable to Margaret Cross.
