Vernon Leroy Thies, 71, of Rising Sun, IN, passed away Wednesday, February 7th, 2024 in Anderson, IN. Vernon was born in Milan, IN on June 14, 1952, a son of the late Virginia Eloise (Bovard) Holland and Leroy Thies. Vernon lived his life in Ohio County and attended Rising Sun Schools. He also was a former member of the Rising Sun Fire Department and worked as a special deputy under Sheriff Dale Holland. Vernon was employed at Schmaltz Concrete for several years and went on to retire from Hilltop Basic Resources, where he was a heavy equipment operator for over twenty years. Vernon loved the outdoors. He especially enjoyed fishing. Vernon also liked to hunt, cut wood and doing yard work on his zero turn mower. Vernon was the husband of Kay (Kelly) Thies, of Rising Sun, IN. They were married on April 28, 2017.

In addition to his loving wife Kay, Vernon is  survived by his stepchildren, who he considered his own; Debbie Johnson, of Madison, IN and Edward Johnson, of Miamitown, OH; by 4 grandchildren: Steven, Michael, Dylan and Danielle and by 5 great grandchildren: Makaylah, Kori, Ryan, Jordan and Daniel. Vernon is also survived by a sister, Cheryl Baker, of Aurora, IN and a brother, Barry Keith Holland, of Ohio. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents and by his sisters, Jane Ann Wainscott and Sharon Kay Walton.
 
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM, Tuesday, February 13th at Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun, IN with Eldon Fancher officiating. Visitation will be held 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Tuesday, February 13th at Markland Funeral Home. Memorial donations are towards funeral expense. marklandfuneralhome.com
