William H. "Bill" Gridley

William Harold "Bill" Gridley, 90, of Rising Sun, IN, passed away on Wednesday, August 3rd, 2022 at his residence. Bill was born in Patriot, IN on October 21, 1931, a son of the late Mary Elizabeth (Kinnett) Gridley and Abijah North Gridley. Bill spent his childhood in Switzerland County and attended Patriot Schools. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army as a Sgt. during the Korean War. While in service, Bill received the following commendations: Korean Service Ribbon/w1 Bronze Service Star, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. Bill married the love of his life, Barbara Jean (Hunt) Gridley on December 22, 1952 at the Grant's Creek Baptist Church. Bill and Barb were married over 66 years until her passing on May 22, 2019. Bill worked as a custodian for Rising Sun/Ohio County Schools for over 33 years. He also drove a school bus for 27 of those years. Bill also formerly worked at the Sunoco Station, drove truck for Lowell Bliss, worked at Grand Victoria Casino and farmed. Bill was a life time member of the Rising Sun American Legion Post # 59 and VFW. He was also a former member of the Rising Sun Fire Department. Bill loved being with his family and they loved their uncle Bill. Bill also loved kids and would do anything to help those in need.

Bill is survived by several loving nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and many, many friends. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, by his wife, Barbara Jean in 2019, by his daughter, Lois Ann Neff in 2015 and by brothers, James Abijah, Oliver David, Robert Shaw & Gordon Leroy Gridley.

Funeral services will be 11 AM, Saturday, August 6th at Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun, IN with Eldon Fancher officiating. Visitation will be held 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, August 5th at Markland Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will be at Rising Sun New Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Ohio County Health Department (immunization program), Rising Sun Schools (lunch program), Boy Scout Troop #605 or Rising Sun Fire Department.
